Background
Dr Rajesh Rajendran is a Associate Medical Director for Infection Control at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and also a Consultant Microbiologist. He is the Clinical Head of Laboratory Medicine for Manchester university NHS foundation trust, overseeing all disciplines with pathology. He is also the Senior lecturer for Manchester University for Medical microbiology, infection prevention and control as well as an examiner at the Manchester Medical school.
He was awarded the Membership of the faculty of public health for his work on COVID 19 and antimicrobial resistance.
Experience
Experienced in management of infections, prevention and control and actively involved in the management of all infections and sepsis. He is on GMC’s list of Experts and also produces expert reports for NHS resolutions. His other interests include decontamination of endoscopes, ventilation and infections arising from surgery. He is actively involved in the day-to-day management C.difficile and MRSA. He also has expertise in the management of communicable diseases like TB and other tropical infections.
He is actively involved in research projects related to infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.
Leadership
Dr Rajendran is the Regional Medical Microbiologist and IPC doctor for NHS Northwest. He chairs the Greater Manchester infection group. He is actively involved in a Commonwealth Project on antibiotic resistance in Ghana. He has been leading on the COVID 19 management from a clinical and infection control point of view in the trusts he is working. He is actively involved in the clinical management of COVID-19 cases with regards to diagnosis, testing, and prevention strategies in Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
Special Interests
His special interests include, COVID 19, Health care associated infections such as Clostridium difficile, MRSA infection. He heads the Bone and Joint infections MDT and is actively involved in Antibiotic Stewardship, including the development of evidence-based guidelines conducting antibiotic ward rounds and participating in surveillance and audits as prescribed by the DoH on antibiotic consumption to reduce antibiotic resistance.
